At the age of 19 she moved into an apartment on Riverside Drive in New York, with an actress and showgirl. This showgirl introduced her to a gangster, who paid her for use of her flat. She then began to find clients for him, and slowly began her work as a MadamIn 1920, under the protection of Dutch Schultz, a mobster, and ‘Lucky’ Luciano she opened her first bordello. Some of her guests included the New York mayor, Jimmy Walker and Robert Benchley.Her business sense was shrewd. She knew how to market business very successfully.

Her flamboyant dress gained her publicity which she always used to advantage.
